Gordon Brown was first introduced to the art of woodworking as a child. At a very young age, Gordon and his older brother started working with their father building homes in Billings, MT. As he got older and started working on projects of his own, he realized this was something he loved to do- start with a vision and see it become reality. He can still hear his father telling him that "Quality over quantity" is the most important thing and "No shortcuts". At Uncommon Grove, each design is handcrafted, with a focus on detail.
In 2009, Gordon and his wife Lyndee moved from Montana to Oregon. Gordon still had a passion for woodwork and began building benches out of old wood pallets. A true team effort, Lyndee's job was to remove all the nails from the pallets without splitting the wood.
After selling on Craigs List, Gordon received a request for a custom-built Kitchen Island. This is the beginning of what will become Uncommon Grove.
In 2014 the Browns moved back to Helena, MT to be closer to family. It's here that Gordon started building with old barnwood and loved it!
In 2016, the couple packed up a U-Haul full of old barnwood and headed back to Oregon. As luck or fate would have it, they were able to move back into the same house they had before! It was at that point they realized that Oregon was truly their home.
After years of working full-time during the week, and fulfilling custom orders on weekends, Gordon's dream of turning a hobby into a business became a reality in June 2020 and Uncommon Grove was officially launched.
